Maw of the Obzedat turns a board full of tokens into a lethal pump effect the moment you need it — sacrifice your whole squad, give your remaining creatures +1/+1 for each one, and end the game on the spot. The five-mana cost is real, but pair it with Pitiless Plunderer and those sacrificed tokens refund themselves in Treasure, making the math even more lopsided.

Maw of the Obzedat is a Commander card through and through — the token-dense, sacrifice-friendly battlefields that Commander produces are exactly where a mass-pump effect at instant speed does its best work. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, five mana for a 2/2 with a conditional activated ability can't compete with the efficiency those formats demand, so it sees essentially no play there. Legacy and Vintage are likewise out of reach for practical reasons, not legality ones. Commander is the one format where Maw of the Obzedat earns its slot, specifically in Orzhov or Mardu token-sacrifice builds that can flood the board before turning it sideways.
