In Commander, Maulfist Squad occupies a narrow niche — the Threaten effect is most valuable in decks that can sacrifice the stolen creature before it's returned, and there are cheaper or more repeatable effects available at most power levels. In Pauper, where the card pool is restricted and every stapled-on effect has more relative value, Maulfist Squad is worth a closer look in aggressive black shells that can use the body and the tempo swing. Legacy, Vintage, and Modern have enough redundancy and raw power that a four-mana 3/3 rarely competes, even with upside. Pioneer sits in the middle — playable in the right brew, but not a staple.
