Master Biomancer turns every subsequent creature you cast into a pre-countered threat, and in the right deck that snowballs fast enough to close games on its own. Xavier Sal, Infested Captain and Volrath, the Shapestealer are the commanders most eager to abuse it, but the four-mana cost means you need board protection ready or it gets answered before a single creature enters.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Volrath, the Shapestealer
Volrath, the Shapestealer copies other creatures mid-combat and keeps their counter payoffs — stacking -1/-1 counters on enemies while Master Biomancer loads +1/+1 counters onto every new arrival creates a split-pressure engine that forces opponents into bad blocks or worse trades.

Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood
Xolatoyac, the Smiling Flood cares about creatures entering with counters already on them, so Master Biomancer isn't a support piece here — it's a prerequisite. Every creature you cast after Biomancer lands immediately qualifies for Xolatoyac's triggered abilities.

Ezuri, Claw of Progress
Ezuri, Claw of Progress generates experience counters off creatures with power 2 or less, and Master Biomancer can push those same creatures over that threshold on later turns — it's a timing puzzle you control, letting you bank experience early and then flip the axis when you're ready to attack.

Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres
Ezuri, Stalker of Spheres converts +1/+1 counters into card draw, and Master Biomancer guarantees a counter-laden creature enters on every cast. The two together turn a normal creature curve into an incremental draw engine.

Falco Spara, Pactweaver
Falco Spara, Pactweaver lets you cast spells off the top of your library by removing counters from your creatures, and Master Biomancer keeps refilling that counter supply with every new creature you deploy — the two form a self-sustaining loop of resource generation.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Master Biomancer belongs — the longer a game runs, the more devastating a permanent that front-loads counters onto every creature becomes, and multiplayer tables give it time to generate compounding value before opponents coordinate an answer. In Modern and Pioneer, a four-mana do-nothing-until-your-next-creature is simply too slow for formats that kill on turn four; the effect isn't worth the tempo cost. Legacy and Vintage are theoretically legal but Master Biomancer competes with threats that end the game outright at the same or lower mana investment, so it never sees play there. Oathbreaker follows Commander's pace more closely and could support it in a counters-based build, but the restricted card selection makes it a niche inclusion.

$1.04 cheap tier
At $1.04, Master Biomancer is firmly in bulk-rare territory — cheap enough to slot into any counters deck without a second thought. It's unlikely to climb significantly given multiple printings, but at this price the question is never cost, it's whether your deck can protect a four-mana creature long enough to matter.
