Masked Blackguard enters the battlefield and immediately tutors a Rogue or Cleric card from your library to the top of your deck, stapling meaningful card selection onto a 2/1 body with menace for two mana. The cost is real — you're not drawing the card, just stacking it — but in any deck that wants consistent access to a specific creature type, that's a compact package.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Masked Blackguard earns a slot in Rogue and Cleric tribal builds, where topdeck tutoring is functionally card advantage given how frequently those strategies draw each turn. Pauper is where it competes hardest — two-mana creatures are under serious pressure there, and the tutor effect needs to pull something immediately impactful to justify the tempo cost. In Modern and Pioneer it's too fair for constructed relevance; neither format rewards a 2/1 that sets up rather than executes. Legacy and Vintage have no interest. Oathbreaker mirrors the Commander calculus: if your signature spell or win condition is a Rogue or Cleric, Masked Blackguard is a redundant line to it.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Masked Blackguard is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not scarcity. That price is stable by definition; there's no meaningful downside risk on a card this cheap, and no realistic upside unless a future tribal commander pushes heavy demand.
