Marauding Knight enters the battlefield with +1/+1 counters for each black permanent your opponents control, turning their own swamps and creatures into a size multiplier on your side. The payoff scales directly with how heavily black your table runs — in the right pod it's a four- or five-mana threat that arrives as a 6/6 or larger; at the wrong table it's a vanilla 2/2.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Marauding Knight is worth serious consideration, and only in metas where black is prevalent — mono-black goodstuff commanders like Erebos, Sheoldred, or Yawgmoth tables guarantee fat counters every game. In Legacy and Vintage it's legal but completely irrelevant; the format speed and card quality make a conditionally large four-drop unplayable. Oathbreaker follows the same logic as Commander: worthwhile if your pod skews black, a dead card otherwise.

Price Context
Current price
$0.69 bulk tier
At $0.69, Marauding Knight sits firmly in bulk territory — you're not paying a premium for power, you're paying for a niche role-player. Bulk rares rarely appreciate unless they find a competitive home, and this one's ceiling is entirely Commander-dependent, so buy it for the effect and don't expect the price to move.
