Malicious Malfunction gives you a hard destroy on any artifact or creature with no targeting restrictions — exile or no, indestructible aside — at three mana at instant speed. The cost is that triple-black pip, which walls it out of anything beyond mono-black or heavily black-skewed builds.

Commander is where Malicious Malfunction actually lives — three mana to destroy any artifact or creature at instant speed is clean, unconditional removal, and black decks that can reliably hit BBB on turn three will run it without hesitation. Outside Commander, the competition gets brutal: Modern and Pioneer have access to Fatal Push, March of Otherworldly Light, and Sheoldred's Edict at lower mana investment with fewer color demands, and Malicious Malfunction doesn't offer enough upside over those options to earn a slot. Legacy and Vintage have even cheaper and more efficient answers. Stick to Commander, specifically mono-black or two-color decks where black is the dominant color.
