Malicious Eclipse hits the board and immediately threatens multiple permanents at once — the sacrifice-based removal scales with how many creatures or artifacts you control, making it punishing in token or artifact strategies. At a low mana cost, the ceiling is real, but the floor is miserable if your board is thin when you cast it.

Malicious Eclipse is a Commander card first and almost exclusively — the political and board-state complexity of four-player games lets the sacrifice clause do real work, especially in go-wide decks that can threaten several targets simultaneously. In 1v1 formats like Modern, Pioneer, or Legacy, opponents can more easily play around it by keeping a lean board, and dedicated spot removal or sweepers simply do the job more reliably. Standard is the one constructed format where it might see fringe play if the meta rewards this style of attrition, but Malicious Eclipse hasn't broken through there. Treat it as a Commander-specific tool.

Price Context
Current price
$0.21 bulk tier
At $0.21, Malicious Eclipse is firmly bulk — the kind of card you pick up as a throw-in without thinking twice. Bulk rares rarely appreciate unless they land in a dominant competitive deck, and nothing about this card's current trajectory suggests that's coming.
