The cost is real: five mana and a discard-or-sacrifice each activation, but in a shell built around Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator or token spam, that cost evaporates fast.

Commander is where Magmaw actually lives. The repeatable ping triggers Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator on demand, and any deck flooding the board with cheap tokens treats the sacrifice outlet as pure upside. In Legacy and Vintage, five mana for a 5/3 that deals 1 damage at a time isn't close to competitive — the formats move too fast and hit too hard for Magmaw to matter. Modern is legal but equally uninterested; the rate is just too slow against the threats those formats present. Stick to Commander, where the synergy density is high enough to justify the mana investment.
