Magmaroth rewards you for spending mana — each spell you cast chips a counter off it and replaces that counter with a card or damage or both, depending on the build. The cost is running a card that does nothing the turn it enters; patience is the price of the payoff.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Magmaroth lives — the format's longer games and spell-heavy strategies give it enough time to trigger repeatedly and generate real advantage. In Modern or Legacy, the tempo loss of playing a do-nothing-on-entry permanent is too steep against decks that end the game on turns three and four. Pioneer is similarly inhospitable for the same reason. Magmaroth is legal across Vintage, Legacy, Pioneer, and Oathbreaker, but none of those formats want what it's selling.

Pricing data for Magmaroth isn't available yet, which typically means it's either a very recent printing or a low-supply oddity — check Scryfall or TCGPlayer for current market listings. Until price history stabilizes, treat it as a pickup-of-opportunity rather than a planned acquisition.
