Magma Jet deals 2 damage and lets you scry 2 — the scry is the reason to run it, not the damage. Two mana for 2 damage is below rate by every modern benchmark, and better options exist in almost every context.

In Commander, Magma Jet is too low-impact to justify a slot — 2 damage rarely kills a commander, the scry 2 doesn't compensate for the tempo loss, and the format's 40-life baseline makes small burn nearly irrelevant. Pauper is where Magma Jet has historically done real work: common-only card quality is lower, scry 2 on an instant is a meaningful selection tool, and 2 damage lines up against creatures that actually matter in that format. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's outclassed — Lightning Bolt, Unholy Heat, and their peers do more for the same or less mana. Vintage has the raw power density to ignore it entirely.
