Maelstrom Djinn is a 7/5 flyer with morph that reduces its unmorph cost by two generic mana for each other face-down creature you control — in the right shell it hits the board for next to nothing, but that shell requires dedicated support to pay off. Outside a face-down-matters deck, it's a slow, expensive beatstick that doesn't justify the slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Maelstrom Djinn is legal in Commander, Legacy, Modern, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it sees virtually no play outside Commander. In Legacy and Vintage the competition at seven mana is absurd and the morph payoff doesn't scale to those formats. Modern has better threats at every point on the curve. Commander is where Maelstrom Djinn has a real home, specifically in morph or face-down-matters decks where stacking multiple hidden creatures makes the unmorph cost approach zero — a genuine threat that comes out of nowhere.

Price Context
Current price
$0.24 bulk tier
At $0.24, Maelstrom Djinn is deep bulk, which tracks with its narrow application. It won't creep up in price unless a new morph-matters commander breaks into the format and drives demand.
