Macabre Mockery card art
Macabre Mockery steals a creature from an opponent's graveyard, gives it haste, and swings it right back — all at instant speed for four mana. The catch is the end-of-turn exile clause, which limits the upside in most decks but becomes irrelevant the moment Obeka, Brute Chronologist is on the battlefield.

Obeka, Brute Chronologist's ability to end the turn before cleanup fires turns Macabre Mockery into a permanent theft — you attack with the stolen creature, Obeka ends the turn, and the exile trigger never resolves.

Macabre Mockery is a Commander card through and through — the effect scales with the power level of opponents' graveyards, which in multiplayer means you're almost always finding something worth swinging. In Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer it's simply too slow and too conditional; four mana at instant speed for a single attacker doesn't compete with what those formats are doing at that point in the curve. Oathbreaker gives it a home only in graveyard-heavy metas where the haste clause closes a game that same turn.

Price Context

Current price

$0.11 bulk tier

At $0.11, Macabre Mockery is deep bulk — the kind of card you pick up out of a dollar box without thinking twice. Bulk rarely appreciates, but this one doesn't need to: the price is already low enough that running a copy in any Grixis graveyard or theft build costs essentially nothing.
