Loyal Gyrfalcon enters with +1/+1 counters equal to the number of creatures your opponents control, which in a multiplayer game routinely lands it as a 6/7 or larger with flying on turn four or five. The cost is the lieutenant clause — it's a 1/1 without your commander in play, making it a dead card in your hand whenever you're behind.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only realistic home for Loyal Gyrfalcon, and even there it's niche. The lieutenant ability scales off opponent headcount, so a three-pod game with token players on both sides is where it peaks — a reasonable beatstick with evasion for two mana. In Legacy and Vintage it's unplayable; those formats don't care about a conditional 1/1 that needs a commander-style setup. Oathbreaker is technically legal and the planeswalker-as-commander structure means the lieutenant trigger is more consistently online, which nudges its ceiling slightly higher than in Commander.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Loyal Gyrfalcon is deep bulk — the kind of card you pick out of a dollar box without thinking twice. It won't appreciate; the narrow lieutenant clause keeps demand low and supply is ample.
