In Commander, Living Totem competes against a deep bench of four-mana plays that advance your board state more aggressively, and a single counter on an existing creature rarely justifies the slot. Pauper is the most charitable home — +1/+1 counter synergies run leaner there, and a 2/3 with an enter-the-battlefield bonus can pull weight in dedicated counters shells. In Modern and Pioneer, Living Totem is strictly outclassed by cards that provide the same counter effect for less mana or with more upside attached. Legacy and Vintage ignore it entirely.
