Liquid Fire deals damage equal to a spell's mana value to any target and replaces that spell in your hand — a two-for-one that doubles as reach and hand refuel. Six mana for a conditional ping is the problem: outside of high-CMC storm or cascade shells, the damage rarely justifies the slot.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Liquid Fire is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander it has a narrow niche in spellslinger decks that cast high-CMC spells — think Erratic Cyclops or Vadrik, Astral Archmage lines — where the damage can reach double digits and the free draw keeps the engine going. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient burn and card draw, so Liquid Fire doesn't make the cut there. Oathbreaker is the one format where a high-CMC signature spell could theoretically weaponize it, but the six-mana floor is still punishing.

Price Context
Current price
$0.09 bulk tier
At $0.09, Liquid Fire is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not the card. That price is stable by definition: there's no demand pressure to push it up, and it's unlikely to spike without a breakout combo discovery.
