In Commander, Liliana's Defeat is a one-mana spot removal piece that pulls its weight in any black-heavy meta — hitting creatures and planeswalkers on the same card for one mana is efficient, even if it whiffs against white, green, or artifact-based threats. Legacy and Vintage have enough density of black creatures and Liliana planeswalkers that the restriction barely registers, but dedicated removal suites in those formats rarely need this over broader options. Modern and Pioneer offer more targets than you'd expect given black's prevalence, though again, Liliana's Defeat competes with format staples that don't care about color. The bonus life loss against a Liliana planeswalker is largely incidental — useful when it triggers, not a reason to run the card.
