Lazav, the Multifarious turns any graveyard creature into a live combo piece for a single mana, and that activation cost is what makes it absurd — you can chain transformations at instant speed in response to removal, protection spells, or your own mill triggers. The most degenerate line runs through Mirror-Mad Phantasm, where Lazav copies the Phantasm, activates the ability, and mills your entire library in one shot; pair that with Mirko, Obsessive Theorist's graveyard synergies and the deck functionally assembles itself.

In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but competes against a much faster axis — the one-mana activation is real, but a two-mana legend that needs a stocked graveyard is too slow for those formats without a dedicated shell built around it. Modern and Pioneer follow the same logic: the effect is powerful enough that a focused build could exist, but the metagame doesn't currently support a Lazav-centric graveyard combo strategy at those tables.
