Lazav, the Multifarious card art
Lazav, the Multifarious turns any graveyard creature into a live combo piece for a single mana, and that activation cost is what makes it absurd — you can chain transformations at instant speed in response to removal, protection spells, or your own mill triggers. The most degenerate line runs through Mirror-Mad Phantasm, where Lazav copies the Phantasm, activates the ability, and mills your entire library in one shot; pair that with Mirko, Obsessive Theorist's graveyard synergies and the deck functionally assembles itself.

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Mirko, Obsessive Theorist

Mirko, Obsessive Theorist

52.5% of decks · synergy 0.50

Mirko, Obsessive Theorist mills both players as a built-in engine, which means Lazav, the Multifarious always has a stocked graveyard to copy from — the two cards form a self-feeding loop where Mirko fills the bin and Lazav converts whatever lands there into an immediate threat.

02
Lazav, Dimir Mastermind

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind

18.9% of decks · synergy 0.17

Lazav, Dimir Mastermind already wants creatures dying and hitting graveyards, so Lazav, the Multifarious slots in as a faster, cheaper redundancy piece that doesn't need a creature to die to an opponent — it just needs one to exist in any graveyard.

Commander is where Lazav, the Multifarious does its real work, either as the commander of a self-mill combo deck or as a role-player in any Dimir graveyard shell that wants flexible, instant-speed threats. In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but competes against a much faster axis — the one-mana activation is real, but a two-mana legend that needs a stocked graveyard is too slow for those formats without a dedicated shell built around it. Modern and Pioneer follow the same logic: the effect is powerful enough that a focused build could exist, but the metagame doesn't currently support a Lazav-centric graveyard combo strategy at those tables. Oathbreaker is the sleeper format for this card, where graveyard density comes online faster and the signature spell slot can do the mill setup work.

Current price data for Lazav, the Multifarious isn't available in this context, so check Scryfall or your preferred vendor for the live number. Historically it's sat in the $1–3 range for a mythic, which makes it an easy pickup if you're building any Dimir graveyard deck — the combo ceiling is high enough that any sub-$5 price is worth it.
