Lavaborn Muse taxes opponents who let their hands run dry — at its best, it's a repeating Hellfire that costs them three life per turn for doing what aggro and control decks naturally do. The catch is that you don't control the trigger: your opponents simply hold two cards and shut it off entirely.

In Commander, Lavaborn Muse fits discard-pressure builds — Nekusar, the Mindrazer or Kaervek the Merciless shells that want opponents depleted before the trigger even fires. Four players means more chances to catch someone hellbent, but it also means three people who can keep two cards specifically to dodge it. In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but competes with faster, unconditional pressure, and the conditional trigger simply doesn't clear the bar in those formats. Lavaborn Muse is a Commander card in practice, and even there it wants a dedicated hand-disruption shell rather than a slot in any red deck.
