Kuro, Pitlord puts a -1/-1 counter factory on the board — opponents lose a creature a turn for as long as you can pay the toll. The catch is that upkeep cost of paying life equal to its power: eight life every turn, which kills you before it kills anyone else unless your life total is already irrelevant, ideally through Repay in Kind.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Kuro, Pitlord sees real play, and only in dedicated life-manipulation shells — mono-black life-loss decks and Repay in Kind combo lists specifically. In Legacy and Vintage it's a nine-mana creature that asks you to pay eight life per turn in formats that end games on turn one or two, so it never touches a competitive list. Oathbreaker is theoretically legal but shares the same problem: the setup cost is too high for any 60-card environment where the game ends before you untap twice.

Current price
$0.52 bulk tier
At $0.52, Kuro, Pitlord is bulk — the price reflects exactly how narrow its applications are. It's stable there; nothing about its design suggests a reprint bump or sudden demand spike, so pick it up cheap if the combo appeals and don't expect it to move.
