Krovikan Vampire turns your opponents' dead creatures into a growing threat — any creature that dies on your turn while it's in play comes under your control until end of turn, and if it deals damage to a player, you keep it permanently. The setup cost is real: you need creatures dying on your turn reliably, which means the card does nothing in a vacuum.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|

| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Krovikan Vampire is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but it's a Commander card through and through — the format's longer games and multiplayer board states give it the fuel it needs. In Legacy and Vintage it's far too slow and conditional to see play, competing against formats where games end before the graveyard recursion engine gets rolling. In Commander, it fits best in black aristocrats builds where you're already engineering creature deaths every turn, turning opponents' creatures into weapons and then permanents. Oathbreaker could support it in a dedicated sacrifice shell, but the 20-life starting total shrinks the window considerably.
