Kookus enters as a 5/5 trampler for five mana — reasonable stats — but it attacks its controller on upkeep unless you control a Keeper of Kookus, a dependency that makes it a liability in any deck that can't guarantee the babysitter is always in play. The conditional self-damage clause is too unreliable to build around and too punishing to ignore.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Kookus is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but sees essentially no competitive play in any of them. In Commander, the Keeper of Kookus requirement is a glaring two-card dependency across a 99-card deck, and a 5/5 trample for five mana is nowhere near the power threshold that justifies that fragility. Legacy and Vintage have access to far more efficient five-drops, and neither format has any incentive to maintain a specific creature on board just to keep a beater from dealing 3 to you each upkeep. Oathbreaker shares Commander's casual context but also its indifference to Kookus.

$0.74 bulk tier
At $0.74, Kookus sits at the low end of bulk — priced about right for a card with negligible demand across all formats. There's no meaningful upward price pressure here; it's a bulk rare that's priced like one.
