Kobold Overlord gives your Kobolds first strike and +0/+1, which sounds narrow until you realize free Kobolds exist and tribal payoffs scale with the count. The problem is that a 1/2 lord that costs two mana only moves the needle in a deck already built to swarm with Kobolds — outside that shell, it does nothing.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |

Kobold Overlord is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and that covers every format where it's realistically playable. In Commander, it slots into Kobold tribal lists — most of which use a free-cast shell built around Shadowborn Apostle-style redundancy with cards like Crookshank Kobolds and Kobolds of Kher Keep — where Kobold Overlord shores up the tribe's otherwise paper-thin bodies. Legacy sees zero competitive play for it; Kobold combo decks in that format are looking to generate infinite mana or tokens, not to fight in combat. Vintage is the same story.
