Knight of Sorrows trades vigilance and a repeatable afterlife trigger for a steep five-mana ask on a 2/4 body — the stat line doesn't justify the slot on rate alone. Where it earns consideration is in reanimator and sacrifice shells that can abuse Nim Deathmantle loops, turning each death into a free 1/1 flier and a reset button.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Knight of Sorrows has a real argument — the singleton rule means any card with a unique trigger gets evaluated on ceiling, not floor, and sacrifice loops make that afterlife 1 worth more than it looks on paper. In Pauper it's legal but competing against commons with far better efficiency at every point on the curve. Modern, Pioneer, Legacy, and Vintage aren't looking for a five-mana vanilla-adjacent creature with one slow-burn token, and Knight of Sorrows won't see play in any of them.

$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Knight of Sorrows is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a box rather than buy. Bulk mythics occasionally spike on combo discovery, but a common with narrow application has essentially no price floor to fall through and no realistic ceiling to climb toward.
