Knight of Dawn is a 2/2 first striker that can gain protection from any color on demand — relevant in combat and as a political tool, but three mana for a 2/2 is a tough sell in 2024. It sees play almost exclusively in white weenie and Knight-tribal Commander lists that want bodies with built-in resilience, not as a general-purpose inclusion.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Knight of Dawn is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, and that's where the conversation ends — Modern, Pioneer, Standard, and Pauper all exclude it. In Legacy and Vintage, it doesn't see competitive play; three mana for a 2/2 with a conditional activated ability isn't close to the power threshold those formats demand. Commander is the only realistic home, and even there Knight of Dawn needs a tribal hook — a Syr Gwyn, Hero of Ashvale or similar Knights-matter commander — to justify the slot over more efficient protection creatures.

Price Context
Current price
$0.20 bulk tier
At $0.20, Knight of Dawn is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not power. That price is stable simply because demand is low and supply is abundant, not because it's poised for a breakout.
