Karai's Technique card art
Karai's Technique puts a copy of target creature token onto the battlefield — instant speed, no mana cost beyond the spell itself — which makes it a multiplicative threat rather than an incremental one. It's narrowly scoped to tokens, so outside of Splinter, Radical Rat and similar token-doubling shells it rarely earns its slot, but inside those decks it's one of the most efficient copy effects available.

Splinter, Radical Rat

Splinter, Radical Rat's ability to generate and leverage token copies makes Karai's Technique a natural fit — instant-speed duplication of your best token at zero additional cost beyond the spell is exactly the kind of explosive tempo play Splinter wants to close a game.

In Commander, Karai's Technique earns a slot in dedicated token strategies, particularly those built around Splinter, Radical Rat, where copying a large token at instant speed can end games or blow out a combat. In competitive 60-card formats — Modern, Pioneer, Standard — it competes against a much deeper field of token doublers and copy effects, and the single-target restriction limits its ceiling; most token decks there either go wider or want redundancy on a permanent rather than a sorcery-adjacent spell. Legacy and Vintage give it even less room, where the card-efficiency bar is simply too high for conditional single-copy effects. It's a Commander-first card, and it knows it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.16 bulk tier

At $0.16, Karai's Technique is firmly bulk — easy to pick up and easy to justify experimenting with. Bulk rares at this price point rarely spike unless they find a dominant competitive home, and given its narrow token restriction, expect the price to stay in the floor range.
