Kami of Empty Graves enters as a self-scaling threat — each creature already in your graveyard adds another token to the board, so a mid-to-late game cast can flood the field in a single turn. The five-mana cost is the honest tradeoff: you need a stocked graveyard before it does anything interesting.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Kami of Empty Graves lives — graveyard-matters decks run deep in the format, and the token count scales naturally with a long game. In Pauper it's legal and a common, which matters, but the format's tighter mana curves make a five-drop that needs setup work hard to justify. Legacy and Vintage have the graveyard density to make it explosive but also the interaction density to punish a slow, telegraphed threat; it won't see play there. For Commander specifically, any deck running Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver, Meren of Clan Nel Toth, or similar commanders will find this generates immediate board presence the turn it resolves.

Price Context
Current price
$0.12 bulk tier
At $0.12, Kami of Empty Graves is deep bulk — pickup cost is essentially zero. Bulk commons and uncommons at this price point rarely climb unless a commander pushes them into the spotlight, so treat it as a free include rather than a hold.
