Iridescent Hornbeetle ends every end step by converting +1/+1 counters already on your creatures into free Insect tokens — the wider your board gets with counters, the faster it snowballs. Blech, Loafing Pest decks run it at a 67% clip for exactly this reason, and three mana is a negligible ask for what's effectively a passive token engine.
Best Commanders
Commanders with the highest synergy

Blech, Loafing Pest
Blech, Loafing Pest dumps +1/+1 counters onto creatures relentlessly, and Iridescent Hornbeetle converts that surplus directly into an Insect army at the end of every turn — it's the beetle's best home by a wide margin.

Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest
Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest stacks counters on every creature you control whenever a permanent hits a graveyard, so Iridescent Hornbeetle is cashing in on those counters as a free side effect of the sacrifice loops Mazirek already wants to run.

Ezuri, Claw of Progress
Ezuri, Claw of Progress spends experience counters to load up one creature with a massive +1/+1 counter pile each combat, and Iridescent Hornbeetle translates that concentration of counters into a spread of tokens before the next turn begins.

Aatchik, Emerald Radian
Aatchik, Emerald Radian proliferates and scales counters across the board, giving Iridescent Hornbeetle a steady supply of raw material to convert into Insects every single end step.

Hamza, Guardian of Arashin
Hamza, Guardian of Arashin rewards running a counter-heavy creature base with cost reductions, and Iridescent Hornbeetle fits naturally into that shell while providing a token-generation angle that Hamza's go-wide game plan can exploit.

Iridescent Hornbeetle is a Commander card through and through — the +1/+1 counter synergies it feeds on require a critical mass of permanents and multiple turn cycles to generate meaningful value, and multiplayer games provide exactly that runway. In Modern or Pioneer it's too slow and too narrow; dedicated counter shells like Hardened Scales exist in those formats but have no interest in a three-mana 2/2 that only produces tokens on your end step when faster, more resilient payoffs are available. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters — the power level gap is too large. Iridescent Hornbeetle is worth running in Commander wherever counters are the primary text on your cards; everywhere else, leave it on the shelf.

Price Context
Current price
$0.25 bulk tier
At $0.25, Iridescent Hornbeetle is firmly bulk, and that price is unlikely to move given its narrow application and the absence of any competitive format demand. Pick it up without hesitation for any counter-based Commander build — the cost is negligible relative to the token value it generates.
