Index card art
Index lets you arrange the top five cards of your library in any order for one mana — that's the whole card, and whether it's worth a slot lives or dies on whether your deck punishes a stacked top. In something like Neera, Wild Mage, where the cascade-style trigger fires off the top, that control matters; in a deck without a meaningful top-of-library payoff, Index is a blank.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Neera, Wild Mage

Neera, Wild Mage

22.4% of decks · synergy 0.22

Neera, Wild Mage triggers off the top card of your library, so Index turns a random outcome into a guaranteed hit — stack your best spell on top before Neera fires and the 'wild' in her name disappears.

02
Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign

12.7% of decks · synergy 0.12

Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign triggers free casts off the top card on each attack, but only if that card has an odd mana value — Index lets you place the right odd-cost spell on top before you swing, converting a conditional ability into a reliable engine.

Format Analysis

In Commander, Index is a niche piece that earns its slot only in decks built around top-of-library manipulation — think Yennett, Cryptic Sovereign, Neera, Wild Mage, or any shell running Sensei's Divining Top effects. In Legacy, Vintage, and Pauper it's technically legal but functionally absent from competitive play; Brainstorm and Ponder do strictly more for similar or lower costs. Index is not legal in Pioneer or Standard, which is academic — no competitive list in those formats would have wanted it anyway.

Price Context

Current price

$0.14 bulk tier

At $0.14, Index is deep bulk — easy to acquire and zero risk to slot into a brew. Price stability is a non-issue; it will stay at this floor indefinitely because demand is narrow and supply is plentiful.
