Impetuous Protege borrows the biggest power on the table and swings with it — that's a massive threat for two mana without investing in the creature itself. The catch is mandatory attack and reliance on an opponent's board, which makes it a build-around rather than a generic include.

Impetuous Protege is a Commander card through and through — the political dimension of borrowing an opponent's biggest creature only materializes at a table with multiple players and varied boards. In Legacy and Vintage it's technically legal but nowhere near competitive; two mana for a 1/1 that attacks once before summoning sickness wears off does nothing in those formats. Commander is where the ceiling exists: in goad, aristocrats-adjacent, or political aggro shells, it punches far above its mana cost by turning the scariest threat on the table into a temporary ally.

Price Context
Current price
$0.14 bulk tier
At $0.14, Impetuous Protege is deep bulk — pick it up in any common-bin sweep without a second thought. Bulk rares with narrow applications rarely spike unless a commander releases that makes them near-mandatory, so don't expect movement, but at this price the only question is whether it fits your build.
