Hydrolash blanks an entire attack step — all creatures your opponents control get -2/-0 until end of turn — and replaces itself for two mana. At instant speed, that's a combat trick, a fog variant, and a cantrip stapled together, and two mana is the right price for all three.
Format Analysis

Commander is where Hydrolash earns its slot: stopping a lethal alpha strike from one player while keeping your hand neutral is exactly what blue tempo and spellslinger decks want. In Modern, Legacy, and Vintage, the effect is too narrow — creature combat matters less in those formats, and cantripping doesn't rescue a card that's doing nothing against combo or removal-heavy piles. Pioneer offers the most plausible non-Commander home, but even there Hydrolash competes poorly against more versatile interaction. Stick to Commander, where turning a six-power board sideways into a non-event at instant speed is a real political and defensive tool.

Price Context
Current price
$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Hydrolash is deep bulk — the kind of card you pull from a common box without thinking twice. That price is stable; there's no scarcity pressure on a frequently printed instant, and demand will never be high enough to move the needle.
