Huntmaster Liger card art
Huntmaster Liger lands and immediately pumps every cat you control — plus every cat you play after it — turning a wide board into a lethal one without any additional mana investment. The five-mana cost is the real barrier: Nethroi, Apex of Death cheats it into play from the graveyard for free, which is exactly why it shows up there far more than in decks that have to hard-cast it, and anything that can't reanimate or blink it is just paying full rate for a lord with no protection.

Nethroi, Apex of Death

23.8% of decks · synergy 0.23

Huntmaster Liger has zero power, so Nethroi, Apex of Death can reanimate it for free alongside a full board of other zero-power cats — the Liger then pumps everything that just entered, turning a single mutate trigger into an instant threat.

Format Analysis

Huntmaster Liger is a Commander card first and foremost — the format's singleton rule and tribal synergy density are exactly where a five-mana anthem finds its footing. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern and Pioneer, a five-mana lord with no immediate board protection is too slow against the removal density you'll face, and cheaper tribal payoffs exist for Cats specifically. Legacy and Vintage are legal but irrelevant; no competitive shell there wants this effect at this cost. Stick to Commander, and specifically to decks that cheat it into play rather than casting it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.38 bulk tier

At $0.38, Huntmaster Liger is deep bulk — a buy-a-box promo ceiling that never materialized into lasting demand. It's stable there; casual tribal demand keeps it from bottoming out completely, but there's no pressure pushing it higher.
