Hunt the Hunter trades up — it kills any green creature your opponent controls and puts a +1/+1 counter on your attacker for one mana at sorcery speed. The catch is the mirror-match clause: both creatures must be green, so it's a dead card against blue, black, white, and red threats.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |

Hunt the Hunter is a niche piece of spot removal that sees essentially zero play in competitive formats. In Legacy and Vintage, the green-creature restriction is crippling — most threats you need to answer aren't green, and Fatal Push or Swords to Plowshares handle anything Hunt the Hunter can while covering the rest of the board. Modern and Pioneer have the same problem: you're a passenger in green mirrors and irrelevant everywhere else. Commander is the format where Hunt the Hunter is most plausible — green-heavy pods exist, and the counter upside occasionally matters — but even there, the conditional clause makes it a liability in any meta with red, blue, or black decks.
