Hullcarver hits the board and immediately punishes your opponents for playing anything — every spell they cast while it's in the red zone turns into a free discard for them. The ask is a five-mana 4/4 with a conditional evasion clause, which is a real cost, but in the right shell that triggered discard is the whole point. Etrata, Deadly Fugitive is the natural home: she wants opponents empty-handed and creatures dying in unusual ways, and Hullcarver feeds both.

Etrata, Deadly Fugitive
Etrata, Deadly Fugitive's game plan collapses opposing hands while building toward her kill condition, and Hullcarver accelerates both halves — swing in, bait a blocker or a response spell, and the discard trigger fires before damage even resolves.

In Commander, Hullcarver earns its slot in discard-synergy shells where each opponent discarding is three triggers, not one — that multiplies its value well beyond what it does in any 1v1 context. Competitive 60-card formats have no reason to run it; five mana for a 4/4 that requires combat to trigger discard is miles behind what Modern or Pioneer discard decks are doing on turns two and three. Pauper is the one non-Commander format worth a mention, since it's legal there and the competition is weaker, but aggressive discard strategies in Pauper typically want cheaper, more reliable pieces. Hullcarver is a Commander card — build around it or don't run it.

$0.05 bulk tier
At $0.05, Hullcarver is deep bulk — you're buying it out of a commons box, not tracking it on a buylist. Bulk rare prices like this don't move unless a deck archetype breaks through in a high-visibility format, and nothing on the horizon suggests that's coming for a five-mana combat-discard creature.
