Howlgeist puts a 5/4 trampler with undying on the board for six mana — the repeated recursion is the point, not the body. Eirdu, Carrier of Dawn // Isilu, Carrier of Twilight and similar undying-synergy commanders can reset the +1/+1 counter to loop Howlgeist indefinitely, which is where it earns its slot.

Howlgeist is Commander-first — six mana is acceptable in a 40-life format where undying loops generate real value, and most commanders that care about graveyard recursion or +1/+1 counters give it a home. In Legacy and Vintage it's unplayable on rate; nothing about a 5/4 for six competes in those formats regardless of undying. Modern has enough efficient recursive threats that Howlgeist never makes the cut there either. It's legal in Oathbreaker but faces the same ceiling: too slow and too expensive for any 20-life format.
