Hostile Takeover card art
Hostile Takeover hits the board as a three-for-one — wipe all creatures with three or fewer power, drop a 3/3 body, and loot a card, all on one six-mana sorcery. That mana cost is the ceiling, but Cormela, Glamour Thief refunds two of it the turn she's in play, making the effective rate far more competitive.

Cormela, Glamour Thief

11.8% of decks · synergy 0.11

Cormela, Glamour Thief generates two mana whenever an instant or sorcery is cast, so Hostile Takeover effectively costs four in her deck — and when Cormela dies after casting it, you can return the spell from the graveyard to cast it again, turning a single copy into a repeatable board wipe engine.

Hostile Takeover is a Commander card through and through — the combination of mass removal, token generation, and card selection is exactly the kind of three-mode value that justifies a high mana cost at a multiplayer table. In competitive 60-card formats like Modern or Legacy, six mana for a sorcery-speed wipe that misses large threats is far too slow, and you'd never register it over cheaper, unconditional options. Pioneer sits in the same boat — the format's threats outgrow three power too quickly for the removal half to clean the board reliably. Hostile Takeover is playable in Oathbreaker for the same reasons it works in Commander: the format's slower clock gives you time to untap with it.

Price Context

Current price

$0.21 bulk tier

At $0.21, Hostile Takeover is deep bulk — a functional Commander card you can pick up without a second thought. Bulk rares with narrow appeal rarely climb without a tournament breakout, and this one has none on the horizon, so don't expect the price to move.
