Hint of Insanity strips every non-land card from an opponent's hand and exiles them — no discard pile, no recursion, just gone. Three mana for that effect is a steal, but the ceiling depends entirely on how full that hand is when you cast it.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | not legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Hint of Insanity is legal in Commander, Legacy, Vintage, and Oathbreaker, but Commander is where it actually earns a slot. In a four-player game, you pick the most threatening hand at the table and gut it for three mana — a tempo play and a threat answer rolled into one. Legacy and Vintage have faster, more efficient discard packages, and those formats rarely give opponents time to accumulate hands worth targeting anyway, so Hint of Insanity sees essentially zero play there. In Commander, pair it with wheels or discard-matters synergies and it punches well above its mana cost.
