In Commander, Herald of Torment fits black-based voltron and enchantress strategies as a cheap bestow piece that upgrades any commander with flying while leaving a body behind if removed — the one life per upkeep is background noise across four players. In Pioneer and Modern, it competes in a crowded three-drop slot where a 3/1 for three with conditional flying rarely clears the bar against faster threats; the bestow mode is too slow to matter in those formats.
