Herald of the Dreadhorde puts a 2/2 Zombie token into play when it enters, stapling a body-generator onto a three-mana 2/2 — you get two creatures for the price of one cast. The catch is that both halves are underwhelming individually, so Herald of the Dreadhorde only earns its slot when the deck rewards you for the token specifically or the enter-the-battlefield trigger itself.

In Commander, Herald of the Dreadhorde is a role-player in Zombie tribal and token-aristocrats builds — the free Zombie token triggers payoffs like Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver or feeds sacrifice outlets without spending additional resources. Pauper is where it sees the most structured use, slotting into Zombie aggro shells that want cheap, redundant two-for-one bodies at common. In Modern and Pioneer the competition from more efficient three-drops is steep enough that Herald of the Dreadhorde almost never makes the cut outside of budget or tribal builds specifically hunting the Zombie type. Legacy and Vintage don't want it at all — the rate is too slow for those formats' threat density.

Price Context
Current price
$0.04 bulk tier
At $0.04, Herald of the Dreadhorde is deep bulk — you'll find copies in common boxes or throw-in lots rather than singles listings. That price is stable by definition: there's no lower floor, and nothing about its power level suggests upward movement.
