Herald of Hadar lands and immediately drains each opponent for 1 while pulling a card — three life and three cards across a four-player table before anyone untaps. Five mana is a real ask for a 3/3, but the enter-the-battlefield trigger means Mr. House, President and CEO decks are happy to blink or recur it repeatedly.

Mr. House, President and CEO
Mr. House, President and CEO rolls dice on every nontoken artifact entering the battlefield, and Herald of Hadar is an artifact creature — meaning each recast or blink nets dice rolls on top of the drain-and-draw trigger, stacking value fast enough to justify the five-mana slot.

Herald of Hadar is a Commander card through and through — the drain-and-draw trigger scales with opponents, so the four-player default turns a modest enters-the-battlefield clause into three life gained and three cards drawn before anyone responds. In Pauper it's legal but competing against efficient commons that do more for less mana, and it won't make the cut there. Legacy, Modern, and Pioneer are similarly unkind: five mana for a 3/3 with a one-shot trigger isn't close to competitive in those formats. Stick to Commander, and specifically to shells that can blink, reanimate, or otherwise replay Herald of Hadar to lap the trigger.

Price Context
Current price
$0.29 bulk tier
At $0.29, Herald of Hadar sits firmly in bulk territory — grab a copy out of any commons-and-bulk bin without thinking twice. Bulk rares with narrow homes rarely climb unless a new commander breaks them out, so don't expect movement.
