Hemosymbic Mite puts a poison counter on an opponent at the cost of your own life total, which is a steep ask for a one-shot effect on a fragile creature. It's a role-player only in dedicated infect or poison-counter strategies — everywhere else, the life payment buys nothing.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | legal |
| standard | legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Hemosymbic Mite is legal across every major constructed format, but it isn't doing meaningful work outside of Commander. In Standard, Modern, and Pioneer, poison-counter strategies exist but demand more efficient delivery than a 1/1 that taxes your own life; there are simply better vectors. In Commander, it finds its narrowest but most justifiable home: multiplayer games slow the clock enough that incremental poison accumulation matters, and a dedicated Atraxa or Vishgraz shell can extract real value from each counter placed. Legacy and Vintage have no competitive interest here.

Price Context
Current price
$0.06 bulk tier
At $0.06, Hemosymbic Mite is deep bulk — the price of a throwaway slot with zero barrier to entry. It won't hold or gain value, but for poison-counter Commander builds it's an essentially free inclusion.
