Hecteyes card art
Hecteyes puts a scry engine on a body — each time an opponent discards, you scry 1, which adds up fast in discard-heavy black builds. The cost is a 3/3 for four mana with no immediate impact, so it earns its slot only when Tinybones, Bauble Burglar or a similarly discard-hungry commander is keeping opponents' hands empty every turn.

Best Commanders

Commanders with the highest synergy

01
Tinybones, Bauble Burglar

Tinybones, Bauble Burglar

41.6% of decks · synergy 0.38

Tinybones, Bauble Burglar triggers discard repeatedly through its bauble-collecting engine, which means Hecteyes is scrying almost every turn — raw card selection at no extra cost layered on top of the discard gameplan.

02
Tinybones, Trinket Thief

Tinybones, Trinket Thief

27.6% of decks · synergy 0.24

Tinybones, Trinket Thief rewards opponents drawing to empty hands and drains life when they do; Hecteyes turns those same discard triggers into a scry chain that keeps your own hand surgical and on-curve.

03

Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal

23.2% of decks · synergy 0.20

Aclazotz, Deepest Betrayal strips hands on attack, and Hecteyes converts each of those forced discards into a scry 1 — consistent library filtering in a deck that already wants opponents holding nothing.

04

Tergrid, God of Fright

17.8% of decks · synergy 0.15

Tergrid, God of Fright steals permanents off discards and sacrifices, so the discard triggers are already flowing; Hecteyes adds a scry 1 on each one, sharpening your draws without asking for any additional investment.

Format Analysis

Commander is where Hecteyes actually functions — three or more opponents means three or more discard triggers every time the engine fires, turning a modest scry effect into genuine card selection. In 1v1 formats like Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer, the scry rate drops to one opponent's discards, and a 3/3 for four mana can't compete with the raw efficiency those formats demand. Pauper is the one non-Commander format worth mentioning: discard synergies exist at common, but Hecteyes is still too slow and too conditional for a format that punishes four-mana do-nothings. Stick to Commander, specifically discard-matters builds.

Price Context

Current price

$0.15 bulk tier

At $0.15, Hecteyes is deep bulk — pick it up as a throw-in or grab a copy from any common box without a second thought. Bulk commons with narrow Commander niches rarely climb, so treat this as a role-player you acquire for pennies and don't expect to recoup.
