Heavy Mattock gives a creature +2/+0 and landwalk for a land type you choose — relevant evasion stapled to a reasonable power bump — but equipping for three mana on top of a two-mana cast makes it slow enough that most decks have better options. It earns a slot only in dedicated landwalk or Dwarf-tribal strategies where the type-selection flexibility does real work.
Format Analysis

In Commander, Heavy Mattock is a fringe include at best — the three-mana equip cost is a hard sell in a format where equipment competition is fierce and games end before landwalk evasion closes out a win. Pauper is the format where Heavy Mattock sees the most plausible use, since the power floor is lower and a repeatable +2/+0 with conditional evasion on a common is worth evaluating in aggressive commons shells. Legacy and Vintage are non-starters; the card simply doesn't compete at those power levels. If Heavy Mattock has a home anywhere, it's budget Pauper aggro or a heavily tribal Commander build that can justify the equip cost.

Price Context
Current price
$0.07 bulk tier
At $0.07, Heavy Mattock is deep bulk — you're paying for cardboard, not the card. There's no financial upside to hold here; it will stay at the floor unless a future Dwarf-tribal or landwalk commander creates sudden demand, which isn't a bet worth making.
