Heartseeker turns any creature into a repeatable removal engine — tap it, pay two mana, destroy target creature — but four mana to equip and four mana to activate makes that engine expensive to run. It earns its slot only in decks that either untap creatures for free or produce enough mana that eight total mana on turn one activation doesn't sting.

Commander is where Heartseeker sees almost all of its play, specifically in tap-outlet decks — Krenko, Mob Boss tokens, Merfolk untap engines, and Selvala, Heart of the Wilds builds that generate absurd mana — because those shells can pay the activation repeatedly without falling behind. In Legacy and Vintage it's a non-starter: four equip plus two per activation is glacially slow against formats that end the game before you recoup the investment. Modern could theoretically support it in a fringe tap-synergy shell, but cheaper equipment with more immediate impact exists at every point on the curve. Heartseeker's narrow use case lives and dies in Commander.

Price Context
Current price
$1.77 cheap tier
At $1.77, Heartseeker sits comfortably in the cheap tier — easy to pick up without a second thought if the deck calls for it. Demand is narrow enough that the price is unlikely to spike, and supply is steady, so what you see now is essentially what you'll always pay.
