In Commander, Haunting Figment earns its slot in spellslinger decks where instants and sorceries are already the engine — each cantrip, removal spell, or counterspell becomes a free +1/+1 counter. Pauper is arguably its best home: the format's blue spell-dense shells can stack counters fast, and a trampling flyer at common rarity at this size is above the curve. In Modern and Legacy the competition at two mana is fierce enough that Haunting Figment rarely makes the cut outside of budget or themed builds. Pioneer and Oathbreaker follow the same logic as Commander — viable in the right shell, invisible outside of it.
