Hatchery Spider card art
Hatchery Spider enters with up to five +1/+1 counters and puts any number of green permanent cards with converted mana cost 3 or less it reveals directly onto the battlefield — that's a stat-padded body that doubles as a cascade-style deployment engine. The problem is eight mana for a creature with no evasion and a trigger that whiffs the moment your curve runs high; Shelob, Child of Ungoliant is the commander that actually justifies sleeving this up.

Shelob, Child of Ungoliant turns every Spider into a threat, and Hatchery Spider's enters-the-battlefield trigger fits cleanly into a Spider tribal shell where the top of your library is already stacked with cheap green permanents to flood the board alongside a sizeable deathtouch body.

Hatchery Spider is a Commander card — eight mana for a conditional ETB trigger is simply unplayable in competitive Constructed, and it never sees Legacy, Modern, or Pioneer tables. In Commander, the ceiling is a tribal Spider build under Shelob, Child of Ungoliant, where Hatchery Spider's mass deployment can snowball a stalled board state. Outside of tribal, the cost is prohibitive: you need the game to go long, a low-to-the-ground green package to maximize the reveal, and a deck willing to spend its eighth-land turn on a creature without haste or trample. It's a narrow role player, not a staple.

Price Context

Current price

$0.35 bulk tier

At $0.35, Hatchery Spider sits firmly in bulk territory, which accurately reflects its narrow application. Bulk rares rarely recover value without a breakout format moment, and this one has no realistic path to Constructed relevance, so treat it as a cheap tribal pickup and nothing more.
