Harrowing Journey draws three cards and puts three lands into play tapped — your opponent's lands, not yours, which is the catch that keeps it out of most lists. At five mana in black, you're competing with Night's Whisper effects that cost half as much and don't hand an opponent a tempo gift.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is the only format where Harrowing Journey sees any real play, and even there it's a fringe role-player. The three-card draw is real value, but the three opponent lands makes it a liability at a table where one player is already ahead on mana — you're accelerating the threat you need to answer. In Legacy and Vintage it's a non-starter; those formats don't tolerate five-mana sorceries that do nothing to the board. Oathbreaker is legal but the same math applies.

Price Context
Current price
$0.16 bulk tier
At $0.16, Harrowing Journey is deep bulk — you'll find it in any common box or thrown into trade binders for free. That price reflects demand accurately; even at near-zero cost, most Commander builders pass it over for draw spells that don't come with a downside.
