Hammer of Bogardan deals 3 damage repeatedly — every turn if you have the mana — and buries itself back into your hand from the graveyard, making it nearly impossible to permanently answer. The triple-red pip and 3RRR buyback cost make it a mono-red or heavy-red build exclusive, but in those decks it's a slow-burn engine that never runs out of gas.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
In Commander, Hammer of Bogardan is a sustained ping engine in mono-red builds — 3 damage per turn cycle adds up, and the graveyard recursion means removal is wasted on it. In Legacy and Vintage, the card is legal but effectively invisible; faster formats have zero interest in a three-mana sorcery that deals 3, and the buyback cost of 3RRR is disqualifying at those speeds. Modern sees the same problem — even in aggressive red shells, Hammer of Bogardan is too slow and too mana-intensive to compete with one- and two-mana threats. Oathbreaker is the one non-Commander 60-card adjacent format where a mono-red Chandra-style build could justify it, but even there it's a fringe include.

Price Context
Current price
$0.75 bulk tier
At $0.75, Hammer of Bogardan sits in bulk territory — low enough that there's no financial reason not to try it if the deck calls for it. It's a long-printed card with multiple editions keeping supply healthy, so the price is unlikely to move meaningfully in either direction.
