Guile
Creature — Elemental Incarnation
This creature can't be blocked except by three or more creatures.
If a spell or ability you control would counter a spell, instead exile that spell and you may play that card without paying its mana cost.
When Guile is put into a graveyard from anywhere, shuffle it into its owner's library.

Guile turns every counterspell you own into a free spell — counter something, cast it yourself, and if Guile hits the graveyard it shuffles back in and does it again. Six mana is a real ask, but Baral, Chief of Compliance cuts that to five, and any deck that consistently counters spells will recoup the cost fast. Unlike a cheap interaction piece like Flusterstorm, Guile is a win condition disguised as a counterspell payoff.

Baral, Chief of Compliance
Baral, Chief of Compliance reduces Guile's cost by one and loots whenever you counter something, meaning every spell you steal also replaces itself in hand — the two cards form a self-sustaining engine where countering spells draws cards, and those cards are often more counterspells.
Format Analysis
Where it lives, where it can’t
| Format | Verdict |
|---|---|
| commander | legal |
| legacy | legal |
| modern | legal |
| pioneer | not legal |
| standard | not legal |
| vintage | legal |
| pauper | not legal |
| oathbreaker | legal |
Commander is where Guile actually lives — the multiplayer table gives you a constant stream of spells to steal, and the indestructible recursion clause means removal barely slows it down. In Legacy and Vintage, six mana is a non-starter against fast blue decks that would rather run something that costs one or two, and the effect is win-more at a cost that concedes the early game entirely. Modern is technically legal but practically the same story — the format moves too fast for a six-drop that needs other counterspells to function. Stick to Commander, where the slow-roll power of repeatedly stealing high-impact spells off the stack is at its most devastating.

$0.94 bulk tier
At $0.94, Guile is bulk pricing for a card with a legitimate combo ceiling — it's underpriced relative to its impact in dedicated spell-steal builds. Bulk rares with niche commander demand tend to stay cheap until a high-profile deck pushes them, so now is the low-risk window to pick it up.
