Guardian Beast makes all your artifacts indestructible and untargetable while it's in play — the Nevinyrral's Disk lock is the headline application, but blanket artifact protection at that level is backbreaking on its own. Four mana for a 2/4 is the cost, and it's worth it.

Commander is where Guardian Beast earns its reputation — artifact-heavy decks in black or black-inclusive colors run it to protect their board from wraths and targeted removal, and the Nevinyrral's Disk combo alone justifies the slot in any Breya, Etherium Shaper or Mishra, Artificer Prodigy build. Legacy and Vintage both allow it, but the format speed means a four-mana do-nothing-on-entry creature rarely sees competitive play there. Guardian Beast is effectively a Commander card.
