In Commander, Gruesome Realization earns its slot by scaling the drain mode across multiple opponents — hitting three players for 2 life each while drawing two cards is a 6-life swing plus card advantage on one spell. Outside Commander, the modal structure is less impressive: Modern and Pioneer have cheaper, more focused options for either effect, and the sorcery speed kills its utility in interactive formats where instant-speed matters.
